How to create a QR code that scans reliably
Creating the image takes seconds. Creating a code that still works after it is printed, resized and placed in the real world requires a few good decisions.

Start with the visitor’s next action. A website code opens a page, a WhatsApp code starts a conversation, a Wi-Fi code helps a guest join a network, and phone or email codes open the relevant app. Use the shortest useful destination and confirm it works before generating the code. A QR code cannot repair a broken or private link.
2. Choose static or dynamic before printing
A static QR code stores the final content in the pattern. It has no built-in expiry and is ideal when the content will not change. A dynamic QR code stores a managed redirect. You can update its destination and measure scan activity, but the redirect service must remain active. Use dynamic codes for campaigns, menus and expensive print materials that may need corrections.
3. Use contrast that a camera can understand
Dark modules on a light background are the safest choice. Brand colours can work when there is a strong brightness difference, but pale foreground colours, busy photographic backgrounds and transparent overlays can make scanning unreliable. Avoid reversing to light modules on a dark background unless you have tested the exact scanner environment thoroughly.
4. Protect the quiet zone
The empty margin around a QR code is called the quiet zone. It helps a camera separate the code from nearby text, borders and images. Do not crop it away or place other graphics inside it. If a designer puts the code into a poster, make sure the surrounding artwork does not invade this clear area.
5. Size the code for the viewing distance
A business-card code is scanned from close range; a code on a sign may be scanned from several metres away. The farther the phone will be, the larger the printed code needs to be. Complex content also creates a denser pattern, so use a short URL when possible. Print a proof at the real size instead of judging only from a large image on a monitor.
6. Pick PNG or SVG for the job
Use a high-resolution PNG for office documents, online graphics and simple print work. Use SVG when a designer needs to scale the QR code for packaging, banners or other professional artwork. SVG stays sharp at different sizes. Do not convert a small screenshot into a larger image because enlarging pixels does not restore detail.
7. Be careful with a centre logo
Error correction allows a QR code to remain readable when a small portion is covered, which makes centre logos possible. Keep the logo modest, preserve contrast and use high error correction. A logo is not proof that the code will scan: test it on older and newer devices, in different lighting and from the distance customers will use.
8. Test the final artwork, not only the preview
Scan the exported file and a physical proof with at least one iPhone and one Android phone. Test normal indoor light, lower light and the expected viewing distance. Confirm that the exact destination opens, the page is mobile-friendly and any call, email, Wi-Fi or WhatsApp action behaves as intended. Repeat the test after a printer or designer modifies the artwork.

- The destination is correct and publicly accessible.
- Static or dynamic behaviour matches the project.
- Foreground and background have strong contrast.
- The quiet zone is clear on every side.
- The code is large enough for its viewing distance.
- The exported PNG or SVG is sharp.
- Any centre logo is small and tested.
- The final physical proof scans on multiple phones.
